My story

Mark Anthony Baca — Born and raised in the small New Mexico town of Clovis, Mark Anthony grew up carrying a complex cultural heritage: Indigenous, Mexican, and Spanish. From a very young age he experienced the heartache of racial attacks and prejudice, even from members of his own community. As the oldest son of Lucy and Adan Mondragon, and with a lighter Spanish complexion, he became the target of frequent fights and harsh beatings during his childhood. Those early experiences forged in him a fight-or-flight mindset that eventually pushed him to stand up to bullies rather than back down. After enduring street assaults, he turned to Boxing and various Martial Arts, training until he no longer saw himself as a victim. Academically, Mark Anthony faced another set of challenges: labeled special education from his first day of school and remaining in that program through graduation from Travis High in Austin, Texas, he completed high school just before turning 21 years old. Being pushed through the system, dismissed by peers, and talked down to became an all-too-common reality for him. Ultimately, his story is one of resilience against a system and people who were supposed to be impartial protectors but too often contributed to the struggle he had to overcome.

As a teenager it’s no surprise Mark Anthony was like most teenagers trying to find his way. Never having done drugs nor drinking alcohol, Mark Anthony’s only real vice was fighting. He fought with the intensity of someone who felt he had something to prove. Often it was to defend others, stepping in when bullies targeted peers who weren’t strong enough to stand up for themselves. Occasionally he also sought out those moments to display his skills and test himself. Fighting became, in a way, his drug of choice and the place where he felt he belonged.

Before leaving high school in Clovis and moving to Austin, Mark Anthony found unexpected inspiration from a teacher who was also a coach, Dale Fullerton. In tenth grade, when Mark Anthony arrived at school furious and looking for a confrontation, Coach Fullerton quietly calmed him and told him, “Come see me at lunchtime in my classroom.” Still raw and angry—particularly at his father—Mark Anthony went to the classroom and took a seat. Coach opened a filing cabinet, pulled out an old folder and handed him a single sheet of paper. He told Mark Anthony to read it. Reluctantly, Mark Anthony read the title: “My Hero.” The first line began, “My hero is my father because he can fix anything and he loves me even when I make bad choices.” The handwriting was painfully familiar—his own, from an essay the coach had assigned two years earlier. Tears came like a sudden rain. Coach Fullerton came over, put an arm around him and said, “You don’t hate your father, I know you don’t, and I have no doubt he loves you.” Teachers like Coach Fullerton, Mrs. Scroggins and Mrs. Toliver planted seeds that would, over time, grow and help guide Mark Anthony toward the person he has become.

Fast forward to 1990 Mark Anthony got kicked out of school for fighting, no surprise. Moved with aunt and uncle in Austin Texas. Went to school at Travis high and lets just say it wasn’t an easy journey as a student. The gangs were much bigger and lets just say a lot of things were changing. Mark Anthony lost his cousin a few month back on his birthday. His cousins name was Sal and they were only a month apart in age. They called them Salt and pepper and no not the hip hop group lol. losing his cousin was hard and he started volunteering with special needs kids at Travis High. Posted next to this is a picture of one guy in particular. His name was Cecil and Cecil parents abandoned him when he was a baby because of his condition. MarkAnthony would get out of school early as a senior and assisted the special needs class with Sam who was his director. He would help out by feeding him, entertaining him with stories and throwing basket ball around. This became a daily routine for them. Mark Anthony would even go visit Cecil in his shelter home from time to time. Mind you Mark Anthony was already 19 years old when he transferred to Travis. Fast forward two years and its April of 1992. Mark Anthony was about to turn 21 soon and an altercation happened on this day. A grown man around 40 years of ages comes to campus with a club and threatens students looking for some kids his son had a problem with,. Well campus security wasn’t around so Mark Anthony took the club away and made the man leave. Later that day his principal caught wind on the situation and asked Mark Anthony “Are you going to graduate this year ?” His replay was the same every year… probably not! Mr.s Vela Mark Anthony’s Principal said after a long talk… “ I like you Mark Anthony but if you stay in High school another year i am afraid it could be bad for you and me, you will then turn 22 years old and i see many issues that can come so. If you give me your word that you will do something positive with your life i will allow you to graduate and walk with the class of 1992.” To his surprise he quickly said yes and gave her a big hug. Not 100% of making good on his word to be and do things good in life, Mark Anthony just wanted to graduate to make his mom and dad proud. Who knew that shortly after High school Mark Anthony would create an Anti Bullying program and mentor kids all over the country. His campaign saved many lives of children and adults alike. To this day he still goes to schools and mentors kids, also he is creating short inspirational videos to combat Bullying, Suicide and Domestic Violence. He feels that through social media we can reach more people and save more lives.

One of Mark Anthony’s goals was to move back to Austin someday, a dream he fulfilled in 2020. He wanted to find Mrs. Vela and tell her all about his experiences helping children in public and private schools, working with kids’ shelters, supporting women’s shelters, and collaborating with Child Protective Services. In 2024 Mark Anthony discovered that Mrs. Vela had passed away a couple of years earlier, a loss that inspired him to immortalize their connection by turning their story into a film project slated to begin filming next year.

Though out the years, Mark Anthony can list many obstacles he has overcome and many meaningful goals he has accomplished. Even more significant is his role as a father to his daughter, his second-to-youngest, whom he has been raising since he was awarded full custody when Hope was just about to turn two years old. She often asks her father, “Daddy, what's your biggest accomplishment?” Now nearly ten years old, she remains genuinely intrigued by his answer. His response is always the same: “Winning you.” Being able to raise her and watch her grow has been his single greatest and most precious gift. He tells her that everything else in his life is simply icing on the cake.

Mark Anthony often tells people he wouldn’t be where he is today without the many obstacles and trials he faced, and without the mentors who believed in him along the way. His foundation is deeply rooted in his parents, Jose Adan Mondragon and Lucy Mondragon, whose guidance helped shape his character. Alongside his grandmother, Estefanita Baca, they instilled strong values and a steadfast, never-give-up attitude that Mark Anthony carried with him everywhere. The emotional drive to succeed and to make his family proud has consistently been the powerful force behind his determination and perseverance.

Mark Anthony is currently involved in 15–20 movies each year, contributing as an actor, stunt coordinator, or producer. Later in 2026 he will make his directorial debut with the film Eyes of the Innocent, a feature that tackles the issue of human trafficking and stars his friend Rash Evans, the former UFC champion, alongside his daughter Hope. After this project wraps, Mark Anthony has a slate of additional films planned to move into production throughout 2027.
